HOW TO START THE FAMOUS ‘RAW’ DIET?

Lately, I received many emails asking me how I started my RAW trip and what suggestions would I give to people who want to begin, but don’t know how.

First of all, raw trip is your personal trip. You can start exactly same way as one of your friends and apply his tactics. Bare in mind though that some time after the beginning, while you are already feeling like you GOT IT, your tactic might be very different than other’s.

I would say there are some general helpful tips and everyone can benefit from them.

My story was a story of a vegan girl who switched to raw lifestyle basically overnight. But can I actually call it “overnight switch” remembering that I was reading days and nights about RAW before I made my first smoothie ?

So, there goes your first tip:

# 1 . Educate yourself.

  • go to forums and read peoples posts about raw. Post your own questions.
  • buy or borrow few raw food books that have some description of what raw really consists of and at least 10 recipes.
  • if you live in a bigger city, find a community that already organizes potlucks and raw meetings. Place your own add in health food stores about looking for other raw food lovers.
  • if you live in small town, you can still create your own community starting with your best friend. Try to talk about your raw plans only with those fellows that you can trust and from whom you can get some kind of support.
  • watch movies that relate to healthy foods and raw lifestyle
  • explore online blogs about raw

Once you have gathered pieces of priceless knowledge and once you got an insight on how others went raw, you need to decide how much raw you want to be.

#2. Decide about so-called ‘ percentage ‘ of your raw beginning.

Many people went raw overnight and many of them slip right back to kentucky fried chicken! Well, that’s a joke ;-) , but so many people went right back to bread and maybe even pastas , because the trial was too drastic. And by the way, kentucky fried chicken is not in capitals on purpose!

It is up to you to set a deal with yourself. Ask : why do you want to try raw and what you can get from it ?

It is up to you what ‘raw’ really means. We all should feel easy and happy with our choices, but also, please, be honest with yourself. Thinking that one cupcake a day is not a big issue just because you feel like it, gives your addictions too much of a strength.

‘How much raw’ really describes how many cooked meals you are going to keep in your diet. We still are devoted to healthy, organic or even wild food choices and most of us decided on raw VEGAN diet.

#3. Decide about the time frame of raw diet.

Many people feel that setting up a goal that needs to be accomplished by certain date gives them more power to focus on fulfilling that promise.

Are you going to try 100% raw ( simply meaning : no cooked food at all ) for 2 weeks or a month ?

That is how your question can look like. You just need to decide if you are going to set up a final date of your raw experiment or not and see what will happen. Maybe you will actually fall in love with raw food diet and upgrade it to a raw food lifestyle;-)!

#5. Buy nice, inspiring notebook and set an intention.

It is up to you how long you want to go raw and how raw you want to be. But seeing these commitments on the pages of your journal feels like you are actually having a conversation. Especially if there is  nobody who supports your raw dream. Make your goal as clear as it can be. Devote one or more pages for only description about how long and how raw you are going to be. Write it in big letters , keep it organize and clear, like you would make an advertisment. On different pages describe your excitement ( I am sure you are excited! ) and your fears. This will help you later to face the moments of doubts.

#6. Decide if you can get rid of everything that contradicts with raw food diet.

Before I started my journey, I either gave away or threw away every nasty can of sauce or whatever I found disturbing in my fridge. I gave away grains that I didn’t want to eat, I also made a revolution in my bathroom and make-up supplies . If you are not ready for this big step – at least go through your fridge. Bare in mind that fridge will be your girlfriend or boyfriend since now on. You might have to deal with your cravings and mood swings. Somehow, unconsciously your body will lead you to the fridge door. Be sure then that once you open them you can find only the purest foods that are raw related.

#7. Decide if you should talk about your raw trip with others.

Some of us work better once we spread the word about what we are going to accomplish. These people feel like they made a bigger, social commitment; it is no more their own silent goal.

If you are one of them – fine. Make sure though, that you are strong enough, stronger than a goal itself , because people will judge. PEOPLE WILL JUDGE.

AGAIN : PEOPLE WILL JUDGE.

And they do judge usually when they deal with things they don’t know anything about. That is why their first question of all times is : Where do you get your protein from? Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeee… ;-) Also, if you don’t care that they will attack you or ask questions that they don’t expect to be even answered , decide if you have an actual answer.

Otherwise, keep your raw trip for yourself, nourish this secret and think of some practical answers while in public places like restaurants. This way, if you succeed – yell ! and teach others how to go raw! If you fail ( only regarding what goals did you set up for yourself ) – nobody will bother you.

#8. Decide how to act in public places.

Are you ready enough to go to your favorite restaurant with your favorite friends where they serve your favorite before-raw meals ?

If not, because you know you might have this lasagna, stay at home and make a giant green smoothie!

If you are ready to go out, bring with you something that you looovvvee  and add to the dish you’ve ordered – avocado? olives? sun-dried tomato ? This way you are not a passive client of  a restaurant who will eat the less popular dish, but you are actively setting up your raw food mindset again.

#9. Search for local food.

Local food means usually less expensive. If you live in colder climate, try to start your raw journey some time closer to the spring. It is not necessary, but will help you to find green foods easier and at lower prices.

#10. Always, always, always have something prepared in your fridge.

For example, you can premix your greens in one container. Than once you are hungry, you will not be discouraged by chopping and chopping.

Or – make a nice raw dessert that is not too heavy, but can serve as a snack.

It is a good idea to make several dishes twice a week. For example choose your less busy days for food preparation. Make three, four dishes and let them wait in a fridge for a time when you can truly embrace them.

And, especially at the beginning, use greens as a resolution to most of your abstract cravings. They really have a power!

#11. Food is not everything. Find other healthy obsessions !

It seems like even healthy raw foodists have their own obsessions with food. It could be some kind of superfood or usually desserts.

Why not shift the attention to something totally different?

I was painting like crazy the first year of my raw trip! I knew I had to eat and because I can get lost in colors and paper,  I needed to set up an alarm clock to not miss my nourishment.

Is there anything you love to do but you have never truly explored ?

Exercise would be a great switch from focusing on food.

Remember, raw food is not only about going raw vegan. It is more a whole body-mind work with attachments and habits that were never useful anyways.

Please, write your story in comments and tell me how did you start or what are your biggest troubles with raw fantastico trip!

CALIFORNIA:ANGELA ELLIOTT,DR.T AND CHEF ITO.

WHY DID I GO TO CALIFORNIA ?

My husband is a chiropractor and was attending seminar in Huntington Beach.

Before we left, Dr. Tel-Oren emailed us about his talk that he was going to give in LIVING TEMPLE in Huntington Beach !

Can you imagine, that our hotel was just four blocks from this place ?! How lucky we were ?!

Right before Dr. T’s talk we decided to have some soup and salad and what a surprise to find GOOD TO GO, fabulous raw food cafe shop another three blocks from Living Temple ?!

I felt so grateful for all this circumstances that were going to nourish us even if we actually did not plan to explore California through raw foods.

Sorry, guys that I don’t have any pictures from the event..I was so occupied with listening, talking, making notes that somehow I forgot why did I bring my camera for.

DR. TEL-OREN

Dr.T’s speech topic was chosen few days before the actual talk, but somehow it all turned out differently. We supposed to discuss the SKIN topic, but people’s interest went in so many different ways, that we were talking about everything!

I want to give you some points I have taken from that event.

1st POINT :

One of the greatest insights that Dr. T made was the idea of raw food movement transforming into slow food movement.

Let me explain a bit about this bringing my personal experience with Raw Spirit Festival (RSF).

Most of my time at RSF I spent on raw food demos. I saw amazing tricks and dishes made by famous raw food chefs. And we all had a chance to taste them. What a pleasure, let me tell you!

But one thing that bothered me and was actually surprising to notice was people’s food attachments. No, I don’t think that just by switching to raw foods one is loosing his addictions. But what I thought is that once raw food philosophy looks appealing to us, the person starts CONTROLING his addictions.

During almost every food tasting, people were yelling and pushing each other around to grab their dish.

They were screaming that there was not enough food made, running one on the other, making chefs feel uncomfortable, I am sure.

It looked like some kind of starvation party – funny, but actually discouraging picture of conscious raw food movement.

I am glad that there was no TV camera that would show this circus in the news.

So, as you see raw food movement or however you want to call it is far from perfect.

I am sure that the idea of SLOW FOOD VEGAN movement would serve all of us better.

2nd POINT :

The other point that needs to be brought up is WHO IS YOUR MENTOR AND WHAT DO YOU BUY FROM HIM ?

I wish I could tell you openly what I mean, but I guess I might run into troubles.

When I started my raw food trip I believed in everything I have heard from so called mentors.

I was buying everything they were saying I NEED. I spend lots of money and a bit brainwashed myself. It felt great to belong to society that EATS THE SAME AS I DO.

What’s funny about my behavior is that I thought I am the one that has a control over myself.

Let me explain this using DR. BOB MARTIN strategy. If you read my post about him, you already know what I mean. He claims to be somewhat holistic doctor that does not sell harsh, mainstream products. By attending his event I learned his marketing strategy that consists of :

  • claim you are different than the mainstream
  • build scarcity
  • sell

The products he is affiliated with are just the other side of the same coin.

A lot of raw food mentors act on the same rules and they might do some harm. Some of them teach you how to approach this lifestyle, but some of them just sell everything what is hot and profitable. After being on that kind of high, I know that there is a lot of products that you DON’T NEED. You can have fun with maca or cacao or whatever, but be careful to not play too much with this stimulants.

What you need to have is experienced, educated teacher that EDUCATES YOU. Spend money on EDUCATION, BABY!

3rd POINT :

This one I loved!

We were discussing the TRANSITION time. Do you really need one? Does the person who comes from sad diet need to go through transition time before entering a full spectrum of raw food ‘diet’?

What Dr. T stressed out is that the transition time might be the final state for many. On the way to your final state ( whatever your goal is ) you might switch from harm substances to, let’s call them, semi-harm. Isn’t it another way of filling up yourself with better than bad, but worse the excellent ? And why are we choosing half-way goals? Is it to please our attachments ?

Going raw vegan ( if this is your final goal ) is not a rollercoaster ride. What harm can greens, coconuts, powerful fruits and veggies do for you ?! All it needs to be done is to GO FOR IT! With no hold-ons.

Dr. T was mentioning  Co-ops that figured out their big $$$ in selling organic meat. All of the sudden they started being appealing to masses who eat flesh even if we know that organic is not enough. We all forgot about, for example, water condition that this animals live of.

4th POINT :

If somebody is saying : everyone needs it – think twice and assume the scam!

5th POINT :

What is very glam nowadays is to take mission trips to foreign countries.

How about taking mission trips in our own USA, where kids and whole families don’t know how to take care of them selves!

PEARLS I HAVE MET

1st PEARL :

This one relates directly to 5th POINT.

Once eating awesome coconut curry soup at GOOD TO GO, I had a pleasure to meet DAVID. He was an independent insurance advisor for hospitals and public schools. We started talking  a bit and organically got into spontaneous closeness. David, if you are reading this – thank you for that hour!

David was present at the opening of Juliano’s restaurant. He knows most of the places and people who are engaged in raw vegan community on the eat coast. How surprising was that he met Dr. Tel-Oren 20 years ago in Israel! Right away I gave him an address and phone numbers to the place where Dr. T had his next seminar in Venice.

David gave me business card of Mr. Wisdom who is the owner of Specialty Health Food Store. I hadn’t a chance to check the place out, but from what I’ve heard this man is supporting African-American community by growing lots of wheatgrass and preparing vegan, raw vegan foods for them. Now, I want you to look closer at this idea.

It is pretty poor community that can not afford to go to Juliano’s or Karyn’s . This people keep their 1$ bill very tightly. I am not sure how Mr. Wisdom is doing it, but lines of people wait for their wheatgrass shot instead of going to McDonalds.

2nd PEARL :

This one is more for an atmosphere I got to feel at particular raw food place.

The restaurant is called : AU LAC and is pretty famous because of seaweed soup as well as the owner, chef ITO, who took a vow of silence originally for a year, but rumors say it’s been 8 years already !

The food is to die for! The presentation is spectacular ! The Supertonic Bar is beyond imagination ! Chef ITO walks between tables and shakes hands with everyone with an amazing smile.

3rd PEARL :

Time for my most important discovery!

Her name is Angela Elliott.

I hope you got this far with me and this post, because I kept this marvelous woman for the dessert. Raw food desert !

Angela is raw foodist since 9 years. She is Medical and Master Herbalist, Nutritionist, Paramedical Aesthetician, Herbal Skin Therapist, Certified Gourmet Chef, Reiki Master and much more about what you can read HERE. Angela is also behind the famous first raw vegan sandwich !

She is the author of ALIVE IN FIVE that you have to check out!

Alive in 5: Raw Gourmet Meals in Five Minutes

Also you can order her book along with bonus Teleseminars with Angela from RAW DIVAS WEB SITE.

Well, I am not sure how this beautiful woman did not happen in my life earlier! Her beauty is stunning. Face, body, words, energy, experience ! She works with RAW DIVAS and was helping Dr. T with his event in Living Temple.

We had a chance to talk after Dr.T’s speech and I am sure now that we both fell in love with each other instantly!

This is a women who is not too present in a mainstream and the reason for that is her strong, independent personality and honesty that does not fit into the main mentoring soup.

Women! Angela is preparing her new beauty book – stay tuned! This is what we all are waiting for and believe me – her skin is just stunning !

To not let you fall asleep, I am going to shot up now :-) .

The weekend was amazing and turned out to be different and richer than I planned!

I hope you’ve got some new ideas and insights about raw foods and people who are trying to make your life healthier and more energetic.

Be alive! Laugh out loud ! And choose wisely !

CALIFORNIA NEWS!

I just came back from lovely California!

Some weird circumstances did not allow me to connect to the internet.

Neither Barnes&Nobles nor Starbuck gave me an access. Weird, strange, but I just took it as a sign to stay away from positive ions ;-)

I am catching up with my Green Bay things now, so tomorrow or Thursday- the latest- you will get personal post about what I did in California, who I’ve met and what happened to my heart.

Stay tuned and send me some warm hugs!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK : COCONUT CURRY SOUP

Because of the fall time in Midwest, I want a warm soup today!

Most of us think that raw food recipes are always cold. It is mostly truth, but you can “adjust” them to your needs.

One way to warm up the food is by using ceramic pot on very low temperature and all you have to do is use a finger as a thermometer; it should be warm enough to give a pleasant feeling but cold enough to allow you stick your tissue in!

The other way to feel the warmth of the food is to use a dehydrator as a heating tool. Again, it protects all the goodies from being destroyed by the extremal cooking.

My favorite soup recipe I am going to present to you is:

Coconut Curry Chowder

2 servings :

Ingredients for blending :

  • 1 or two coconuts ( depends on their water content )
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • ginger root ( close to 2 inches ) or 2 Tsp of minced
  • juice of half of a lemon
  • 2 dates
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 Tsp turmeric
  • half or 1 jalapeno pepper
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • cilantro ( I usually use half of a bunch )

Blend everything to a creamy consistency.

Chop :

  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 2 stalks of leeks
  • 1 carrot ( round )
  • shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 avocado

HOW TO :

You might want to have a warm soup this time a year.

Put all the blended cream into ceramic pot and warm it on a low heat ( stick your finger after a while to check if you didn’t overdo it )

When you think it is ready ( warm enough ) , put all the chopped ingredient into the pot, excluding tomatos and avocados. These guys go into the bowl on the bottom.

Cover your tomatos and avocados in glass or wooden bowl with coconut chowder .

Voila!

KALE CHIPS AND HOW TO TAME YOURSELF.

I have some issues with dehydrators.

I believe that this type of food preparation might let these suppressed ‘ugly betties’ come to the surface.

Imagine – as a human being ( and I am sorry, but we all are attached to something ) – you want your dream snack right here, right now. At this point we don’t care if the message about your wants comes from the brain, from your belly or from your empty emotions. You are feeling good , because the thing you are desiring is not processed chocolate or some gluey suicide pudding.

All you want to enjoy is this famous KALE CHIP!

So, you grab my recipe ;-) , that does not have measurements, because it is time to start using our own eyes and intuition to determine how it all should look like. And imagine your own inventions once YOU, my green rockin’ friend have to figure out the amounts!

HERE IT IS :

INGREDIENTS : ( free your hands and eyes, please )

  • one bunch of fresh basil
  • app. 1/2 cup of pine nuts
  • olive oil
  • soaked dried tomato ( reserve the water )
  • nutritional yeast
  • app. 1 Tsp of miso ( I use chickpea miso )
  • turmeric
  • ground black pepper
  • celtic sea salt
  • rosemary
  • your tomato water

The idea is to have a pretty nice flowing consistency.

Dip your kale pieces in pesto, massage and put on dehydration trays. My kale chips usually need between 6-8 hours of dehydration time.

And now the torture begins.

If you are at home, you are probably checking your kale chips every hour, half an hour..your hope is that maybe you can find one that is ready! But it is not. It needs this 8 hours to fulfill your dreams.

Sometimes this feelings reminds me of my chocolate ( magnesium ) cravings during or before my moon-girl days . I can see a resemblance this dorky TV spot about some insurance when people are yelling from their windows :

” It’s my kale chips and I need it NOW ! “

Well, sisters and brothers, dehydrator teaches us something.

The message it carries for us is : If you have taken this raw /life food nutrition trip already, you need to know your weak spots and work on them. Either prepare your kale chips the day before, BUY some for snacking here: Kale Chips (Habanero Ranch), 3.5oz or learn how to wait to get it finally and fully enjoy them. Or, simply, go for a long long walk!

p.s. I am writing this post in a public place. So, the guy comes in and the person behind the counter asks politely : ‘How are you ?’. The guy answers : ‘ Living The Dream ! ‘. Cool, huh ? ;-)

LIFT YOUR SPIRIT! LIFT SOME WEIGHTS!

Food is not everything.
If you want to feel healthy, happy, pretty, joyful – you need to move your body.

My Fitness Childhood

Since I went raw, or since I started being really interested in raw, life foods, in how to prepare them, how to grow them, I actually abounded my yoga classes.
Some of you know that I am a yoga instructor. At my peak performance time I was doing yoga every day for 2 h +.

At the age of 6 my parents enrolled me in an acrobat school. I was doing all these crazy flips and jumps for 13 years. I became professional acrobat, was traveling to contests and eventually I choose trampoline as my discipline.

Through my University times I did few attends to a gym, yoga classes , but it was not by any means a regular activity. Somehow I stopped exercising on a daily basis, I was grateful for my lean and toned body that I worked for through so many years and I guess I decided that I don’t need to move anymore..
Thanks to God I have always loved to dance!

Raw Foods and Athletes

Back to the time when my raw interest started.
I was so occupied with raw food idea by reading, chopping, eating, talking about it, that I stopped my yoga one day without even thinking about it. Again-somehow, I dropped almost everything to get into another obsession : raw lifestyle, which is focused on gaining health by eating raw, life foods.

If you really look closer at raw food web sites, there is not many that talk about fitness or place movement at the same level of importancy as food. Of course you can find posts about yoga, rarely Pilates. We have Tonya Kay , Brendan Brazier, Storm, Tim Van Orden. Not many women. But let me tell you something that I found out just a week ago.

My body was trained most of my life, as I said previously. But till I went for my first weight lifting class last week, I did not know that some muscles actually exist in my body.

Lift some weights!

The class is  called : BodyPump and is designed for those who want to burn calories quickly, gain strength and muscles. Of course everyone chooses how much weight to put on the bar, but needs to follow the repetition cycle.

No need to lie – I was sore for three days! Three days of walking slowly and pretending that my weird movements are only a response for an icy pavements.
Well, I started felling that my raw, life food body was not in the best shape at all.

Three days ago I finally came back to the gym and took spinning class and let me tell you that this one is a BOMB! Awesome endurance and strength builder plus it wipes your fatties away quickly and in an entertaining way.

Why, How and Who ?

Yes, my goal is to loose some inches. I am not really focused on weight loss. I am not fat, overweight. I feel that my body needs to get back in shape; get toned, a bit more muscular, strong.

So far the come back was amazing. The ‘comitement‘ part plays a big role and because I pre-payed the classes I will be at the gym 6 times a week.
To the gym activity I added 10 minutes of rebounding every day, handstands and 10 minutes of headstand.

Now, many of you saw me standing on my hands already. Thank you for all the compliments! I can last with my legs up for quite a while and I am proud of it. It is a great core exercise ( it is up to your core how stable you are up there;-), not really up to  arms/shoulder s) and awesome inversion pose.
Headstand though strengthens the neck ( and if you are writing, painting, sewing..your neck needs to be strong ) and is called the king of assanas because of the overall affect on the whole body.

Girls and boys – if you want the glowing skin and shiny hair it is a great way to get these!

So, this post is all about how to re-connect with your body through movements different than dance, yoga. These are options all great, I am happy for you if you explore them.
But sometimes I feel like raw foodist think that these east movements propositions are the only ones that are ‘ sophisticated ‘ enough to compliment them with living foods. That is maybe why so many raw foodists are skinny and somewhat not show the care for their muscles to be toned.

If you look at Peter Ragnar‘s Body, you know he must lift some weights.

I also got inspired by Lori Painter and her fitness, weight loss plan. This girl is so open that sometimes I think I am very very introvert type. And I just felt in love with her, because there is not many people out there blogging with such a honesty.

So, people, raw or not – you need to feel some muscles! Stretch them, but tone them as well. Feel them to get stronger and stronger! There is no time to wait for your first gym visit !

Get your green muscle the chance to beat !

I like the idea of : say less, smile more.

Because of being far away from Poland, my family who I haven’t seen since five years, my friends, girly girls from Lodz, who I miss so much, because of knowing that the Xmas time will be difficult – I sort of disappeared.

It might be risky for someone who runs web site.

Let’s begin this year together and always feel worthy!

Always! In all ways!

SUGGESTIONS

I am waiting for your suggestions for this coming year.

- what would YOU like me to write about ?
